Benefits of Using Biogas

The use of biogas is practically limitless. Any new house, guest house, lodge, development, golf estate, clinic, hotel, etc. that needs an independent sewerage system, or would like to utilise biogas as a sustainable source of energy, can make use of a biogas digester system.

A biogas digester has the following advantages:

  • Produces methane gas that can be used for cooking purposes, lighting, water heating and to generate electricity
  • Digests organic waste (from the kitchen, garden, sewerage, animal manure, etc.)
  • Prevents methane gas from entering the atmosphere

· Produces organic compost as waste product (in liquid, slurry or solid form)

Biogas

Our planet is at the stage where we have to tap into every source of alternative energy available to us. The sun is our most abundant green energy source and we are already successfully utilising this amazing energy to generate electricity (PV-photo voltaic) and hot water (solar geysers). We are also producing green electricity by utilising the power of the wind and of flowing water by means of wind and hydro turbines.  There is however another relatively untapped source of energy in the form of biogas, specifically here in South Africa.

Types of Digesters

There are quite a number of different digester designs, mainly based on the type of material to be digested, the purpose (gas production or sewerage management or both), technology available and location (both geographical as well as site specific).

What is a Digester?

Methane gas is produced when any type of organic material is allowed to decompose under anaerobic conditions and sufficient heat. The main purpose of a digester is to provide ideal conditions to maximize the production of the methane gas and to store it in such a way that it is safely and practically available when required.
