Benefits of Using Biogas

The use of biogas is practically limitless. Any new house, guest house, lodge, development, golf estate, clinic, hotel, etc. that needs an independent sewerage system, or would like to utilise biogas as a sustainable source of energy, can make use of a biogas digester system.

A biogas digester has the following advantages:

  • Produces methane gas that can be used for cooking purposes, lighting, water heating and to generate electricity
  • Digests organic waste (from the kitchen, garden, sewerage, animal manure, etc.)
  • Prevents methane gas from entering the atmosphere

· Produces organic compost as waste product (in liquid, slurry or solid form)

 


Who is Biogas SA

Biogas SA was created by Mark Tiepelt, a civil engineer by training with 20 years experience in construction, alternative building systems and sustainable energy fields. He is now dedicated to making biogas technology available and accessible to a client base of individual households, small communities, commercial farming enterprises and to the public sector here in South Africa.

 

Biogas SA is the sole licensee for South Africa of the Shenzhen Puxin Science and Technology Company (Puxin) of China. Puxin has developed a unique, patented biogas digester that has eliminated all the disadvantages and enhanced the advantages of the more traditional fixed and floating dome type digester designs. As acknowledgement of its technology and contribution to promoting efficient alternative energy resources, Puxin was awarded the prestigious Global Top Ten Investment Scenarios to Apply New Technologies for Renewable Energy Utilization BlueSky Award in 2006, initiated by the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation.

Mark spent some time in China studying the Puxin technology under Dr Jianan Wang and our association with his company gives us access to the leading edge biogas technology in the world, enabling us to design and build any size of digester for any type of application, from a basic 6m3 household installation to large 1000m3 plus installations suitable for large scale commercial applications such as chicken farms, dairies, etc and even as alternative to sewerage works for entire towns and cities.

One of our core visions at Biogas SA is to play a central role in raising the public awareness of the huge benefits of biogas as a practical, cost effective and sustainable source of alternative energy. Very few people in SA are even aware that this amasing technology even exists. The simplicity of the Puxin design makes it possible to use relatively unskilled labour to construct the digesters, creating job opportunities and allows for the spread of the technology as rapidly as possible.

We are also far advanced in manufacturing a low cost, portable plastic digester that will generate biogas, using primarily waste food as a source. This type of digester will be ideally suited for all South Africans living in informal settlements.
